Love these coats but similarly on a self imposed ban. I went to Milan in the 90s with my parents and my mum and I had hours of fun watching the so chic Milanese in their beautiful coats, with gorgeous bags and classy shoes. It made us realise how pulled together those 3 things can make you look. I know we all know this now, but then we had never appreciated it. It became our mantra when we’d spend a rainy afternoon putting outfits together. My wonderful mum died in February, but I’ve kept a few of her coats cos they’re so beautiful. I’ve got an ancient M&S (labelled as St Michael!) black/sage green reversible swing raincoat that gets loads of compliments even now.
Columns like this give me back hours of my day. I don’t want to search endlessly ever again. Jackets, autumn candles, Chelsea boots, curtains. Just save me from myself.

What's with H&M only going up to a large? I do have an excellent oversized dusky pink wool car coat from them that is my dream coat, so I'm wary of wearing it, but they seem to be going backwards re size inclusivity.

Oh god, coats are my weakness, too! I tend to buy vintage ones now (so I can assuage my guilt). I have SO many, from 1940s onwards, and a lot of them are so heavy and warm as to render them impractical unless you were trekking to the Antarctic with a retinue of staff. But oh, I love them.
I love the look of belted coats, but as someone who’s very short-waisted (and it’s become even worse after babies expanded my hips & ribcage just enough to completely obliterate my waistline), they look sooo bad on me. So I’m in the market for a single-breasted long wool coat if anyone knows some good options (please don’t suggest Aritzia 🫠)

Last autumn I found a burnt orange Aquascutum duffle coat in a charity shop and wore it all last year.
